Title IX declares that colleges must show proportionality. Proportionality means that if half of the students attending the college are female then athletics must be half too. Some colleges that have more male athletes can either cut their program or add a female team. Many colleges have had to cut their athletic programs for both women and men because they just can't afford both. It is hard for colleges to support certain sports that have mostly men and not women. Men athletes feel that these cuts of sports are due to Title IX. They don't believe it is fair to them. Jason Lewis, a former gymnast from Michigan State, claims that, "Twenty-three years ago, there were 107 men's gymnastic teams in this nation and now there are only twenty." Lewis says that "colleges now and days are just investing more into larger sports that get more of a crowd (such as football) and end up cutting funding for minor men's sports." Minor male sports include, gymnastics, wrestling, tennis, track and field. There has been a cut in these sports but is it really due to Title IX?
