“Black love is black wealth’ is a quote from illustrious poet Nikki Giovanni in her poem “Nikki Rosa”. In this poem she orates the circumstances of her childhood and how the portrayal of her memories may be interpreted as tragic, even though she was indeed happy. She explains the love within a family and community can dull the sting of poverty, likewise the Black Power Movement thrived on solidarity within the community. Living in the post- Civil Rights era, one may wonder if the oppression of black people has dwindled down. Unfortunately, we are living under very similar conditions as the Black Power Movement of the 70’s. The recent resurgence of movements against police brutality, the natural hair movement and a rise in black businesses would suggest that a new black power movement is stirring.
The Black Power Movement focused on the inhumane approach within the prison system and police brutality facing Black Citizens of America. The fight is similar, both involving the criminalization and demonization of black people involving the criminal justice system in America. In 1966, the Black Panther Party wrote its Tenants one point is:
“WE WANT an immediate end to POLICE BRUTALITY and MURDER of black people. WE BELIEVE we can end police brutality in our black community by organizing black self-defense groups that are dedicated to defending our black community from racist police oppression and brutality.
