He was a delegate for Boys Nation and because of this he was able to go to the White House and meet then President John F. Kennedy (Biography.com). This was a defining moment for Bill Clinton and after this he knew public service was the route for him. To follow his dream, he went to Georgetown University in Washington D.C where he continued to excel in his academics and went to Oxford University on a Rhodes scholarship. He received his law degree from Yale in 1973 (“WhiteHouse”). While at Yale, Clinton met Hillary Rodham, who also graduated with a law degree, and they were married in 1975. Later down the road, Hillary would play an active part in politics by her husband’s side (Biography.com). This was a strategic move by Clinton because even though he did not think he would against the Republican incumbent John Paul Hammerschmidt, he was able to get noticed and set forth his political platform and policies. Clinton even said “The only reason I ran for congress is they couldn’t get anybody else to it”. Even though Hammerschmidt gained control of this office in 1966, Clinton was legitimate competition causing this race to be the closest one Hammerschmidt had ever been in (“Clinton House”). During this campaign, he had a strong platform for redefining and improving the economy. He advocated a fairer taxing system, a program for national health insurance, protections against inflation among other things (“Clinton House”). He might not have one this office, but the people of Arkansas knew that this would not be the last they see of Bill Clinton, which helped him in 1974, in the race for attorney
