80-83) In that quote Brabantio is referring to Othello as a thief, meaning he sees his daughter Desdemona as a mere object that was “stolen” by this man, in the 1940s women were able to pursue relationships without having to have their fathers approve of it, they were able to openly date multiple men. “She wished she had not heard it, yet she wished /that heaven had made her such a man.”(I. iii. 186-187) This quote can be interpreted as Desdemona wishing she had been born a man so she could go out and experience all the wonderful tales Othello fills her mind with. Women in the 1600s were expected to stay home and care for the home and raise the children, as opposed to the 1940s when women had an opportunity to go out and join the workforce. As WWII began men were drafted left and right leaving many jobs going undone, so women were given these jobs while the men were away fighting the war. Many women worked in factories that made artillery to help the war efforts overseas. The women in Othello had it been written in the USA during the 1940s would less marginalized and would have had a louder voice in the choices made in Othello. While Desdemona was a very virtuous character who was very outspoken, and much stronger than she was given credit for she was still marginalized and pushed to the back. A very prominent relationship in othello is that of Desdemona and Emilia, a mistress and handmaiden relationship. The devotion of Emilia 's love and affection for Desdemona had absolutely no barriers. After Desdemona is murdered and Emilia is stabbed she asks to be let to die next to her mistress “O, lay me by my mistress’ side.”(V. ii. 284) She then dies, this shows the extent of her loyalty to her mistress. In the 1600s maids were very underpaid and mistreated, most maids would work for a room and food. Some of the luckier ones were paid about $6 a year roughly. This dependency on their masters and mistress’ bounded them for life. Without them they would have nothing. In the 1940s on the other hand maids were paid a salary or an hourly wage depending, they had their own home and their own families ,their devotion wasn’t strictly to their bosses which made the boss expendable. If you were fired you just had to find someone else to work for. Desdemona and Emilia’s relationship would be incredibly different in the 1940s. Race was a huge factor during that time so Emilia would probably have been black and not treated very well by Desdemona. Emilia would probably not have had such a loyalty to Desdemona to the point where she wanted to die by her
