Beowulf Mythology Essay
Myths have been around for many years, and generations. In fact myths have been around since man learned to speak. Some famous myths are still well known around the world like Santa Claus, or Zeus the Greek god of the sky. There are different kinds of myths some can be about heroes, gods, or kings, and honesty a myth can be about anything, or anyone it just has to get popular, so people would retell it for generations.
One very well known myth, is the story of the Greek god Zeus. Zeus it the god of the sky, and rules over Olympus. Zeus is usually seen with a lighting bolt, and that is probably why his symbol is the lightning bolt. Zeus is known for being the king of all greek gods. It was written in England sometime between the 8th and the early 11th century. The author was an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet, referred to by scholars as the "Beowulf poet". Beowulf is about a hero who is called on to slay a monster called Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel 's mother attacked the kingdom and gets defeated. After 50 years Beowulf becomes king of Geatland, but gets injured in a battle and died.
One more important mythological hero is Theseus. I like his story because he didn 't use strength to beat his enemy, but his brain. He was wise, and out thought his enemy. He taught people that knowledge was the most powerful thing on Earth. But he died after he got old, and injured in battle, like most heros.
All cultures have leaders. The Greeks have Theseus, the British have Sir Lancelot and King Arthur, the Norse have Sigurs, and the Christians have Jesus. We all have something to tell us to help us feel safe. In the past they told heros watched over them, in the present people think gods watch over them. It really doesn 't matter because, like Zeus, and Odysseus they all become myths, but as soon as they are forgotten are they then truly
