That night, Beowulf decides to sleep inside the banquet hall and encourages his men to make as much noise as possible. Doing all of this in the hopes to lore Grendel out, a blood thirsty monster who is agitated at the sound of happiness, so he can kill him. This all shows examples of bravery and heroicness. Not much time passes until Grendel can’t stand it any longer and creeps his way to the Herot Hall. Beowulf fights Grendel with his bare hands and fully unclothed all doing this to show his men that he can defeat him as his equal.
Beowulf uses his strength and will power to fight Grendel and kill him by tearing his arm off. Grendel manages to escape and make his way back to his home, the bottom of a lake, and calls crying for his mother because he will not last much longer. She cries in despair as she sees her son dying from his arm being torn off. She asks her son who had done this to him and with his last dying breath he tells her Beowulf tore his arm off. The two cultures I chose to compare heroic values for are the ancient stories of Gilgamesh and Beowulf. Although they possess many similar heroic characteristics they also differ greatly. The world that Beowulf depicts and the heroic code of honor that defines much of the story is a relic of pre–Anglo-Saxon culture. The hero of The Epic of Gilgamesh was an actual historical figure, a king who reigned over the Sumerian city-state of Uruk around 2700 B.C.…
