Own biological children where they may not otherwise be able to
Prevent passing on serious genetic conditions. By screening for all inherited genetic conditions where the mutation is known diseases and suffering has the potential to be eliminated.
Once couples have completed their own families they may have extra embryos frozen in storage which they are able to donate to other infertile couples. Advantages: greater disease resistance, Disadvantages of PGD (Biological concepts?)
Because PGD is still a relativity new process to us there may be long term effects of PGD that have not yet been identified. Disadvantage: less genetic diversity, rules out weakness and disability, produce advantageous traits …show more content…
Promoting awareness of the PGD process will help publicize the ability to prevent genetic diseases from being passed down throughout the community. I believe the most effective form of endorsement would be through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, blogs by sharing community experiences and the latest advancements in genetic technology, which will allow people to voice their opinions. The community could act by participating in demonstrations or attending meetings held by organizations like fertility associates to raise awareness about the PGD procedure and the benefits it would bring to our community. They could also fundraise to support couples who are thinking about undertaking PGD as this is one of the social implications that could be decreased, if couples could gain financial assistance from fundraising or another method of sponsorship. Both these sources may be more concerned on the social implications over biological implications. However the information is valid because PGD is a socio-scientific issue so we need information about ethical issues, and there is some support from biological concepts. This source is dated, but the implications are still valid in the use of PGD today. I believe this source can be called bias as it addresses different opinions but focuses on one viewpoint for entertainment purposes, with some support from factual information. The scientific information is not valid as there is no reference to where information was obtained from, and no evidence of peer review. The Doctors, is a TV show hosted by ER physician Dr. Travis Stork, the episode aired on 9 October 2013. There is a panel of four other physicians, who are specialised in this field, who discuss the social and biological issues present with PGD. Although this is one of the more current pieces of information I found, I believe it may be bias as addresses social implications but focuses on what it can do in medical advancements. Scientific information has been researched but cannot be called valid as we have no reference to where their information came from, backed up statements with factual
