ART and Prenatal Testing: Good, Bad, Or Not Worth it?
What makes a family? Is it the house they live in? Is it the memories they share? But what if a couple cannot start their own family, what are their options? Why would they have to be deprived of the human necessity that is family? Assisted Reproduction Technology helps people who cannot make their own families, start a family of their own. Finally, the couple is able to carry a child. But what if they baby isn’t healthy? Prenatal testing is a test for the prenatal baby to check for genetic anomalies. Although helpful, it can have a lot of negative affects. According the New England Journal of Medicine, mother’s who used ART babies have a lower birth weight. Low birth weight can mean nothing and the baby could be perfectly healthy, but sometimes low birth weight can cause negative health effects. Another negative effect of ART is that ART is not always effective in getting people pregnant and can result in stillborn. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the following statement, “Of those, 33,425 (36%) led to a pregnancy, but only 27,406 (29%) resulted in a live birth. In other words, 6,019 (almost 1 in 5) did not result in a live birth.,” To break this down, ART can sometimes fail. A woman can get In Vitro, and it can fail and she won’t be pregnant. It also says that about 20% of the babies are stillborn, which means they are dead at birth. Although this is terrible, these mothers couldn’t have a baby anyway. So if it fails, they can always try again. My mom personally tried using In Vitro which not only failed, but put her in the hospital because she had an allergic reaction to it. But ART also can help people. My cousin, as it runs in my family, had a lot of reproduction trouble and without ART would not be able to have children on her own. ART has a chance of stillbirth or not being able to get pregnant which stresses a mother out. They wanted their child or they want their child living, happy, and healthy. This is where prenatal testing comes into play. Prenatal testing also stresses mothers out because they want to know that their baby is healthy. My cousin, who used IVF to have her son, also had to have prenatal testing. Before the test results came back, the doctors were already preparing her for several other tests because they were 90% that she was going to have a downs baby. Fortunately, the results came back negative and the baby is perfectly healthy. Even though the testing stressed her out, once she was able to know her baby was going to be healthy it put her new motherly concern to rest. But this is not just my cousin. Expecting Women want to know that they can have healthy live
