Benchmarking in a healthcare facility is extremely important because it will show where improvements need to be made. In other words, there are certain performance measures that should be monitored for the purpose of maximizing reimbursement. The performance measures include days in accounts receivable (A/R) and claims at first pay rate. First, there is days in A/R, which is important to strive to have it over 90 days. In other words, this relates to having patient claims being paid within 90 days. This is a standard benchmark by the MGMA used for all healthcare facilities to compare against (MGMA, n.d.). First, there is leadership, which is important because an individual will guide the team to be successful (Joseph, 2011). In fact, guidance includes training and educating team members especially in terms of proper reimbursement. In the healthcare field, the administrator acts as the leader to ensure the employees are properly educating and understand the rule and regulations. The administrator needs to listen to the thoughts and concerns of the employees as well as providing feedback if a task was not performed efficiently. The leader is there to bring the spirits of the team up as well as guiding them to be successful. The next principle is communication. In order to understand the rules and regulations within a healthcare facility the administrators and employees have to communicate efficiently. If there is a problem, question or concern communicating amongst the team members is important in order to solve the issue. Also being able to talk to the administrator about his or her concerns is important because there needs to be a sense of loyalty and trust.
