My Community: A Community Analysis

Being something positive in my community has always been a thing i’ve wanted but, not necessarily knew how to accomplish. It wasn’t until I was a freshman in highschool, I had the opportunity to actually be apart of an institution with a positive outcome. My family had been at a financial crisis, where my father had been laid off from work and going without work for months. This left my mother to be the only one with a job, while my father had unemployment checks being sent monthly. My father had to humble himself, and one day while driving on the road, we saw a sign that said “ free groceries”. This pastor was giving out free groceries to the community, due to signed petitions that are given to stores like safeway or food max. The signatures …show more content…
I’ve met some of the rudest and meanest people while distributing food to those in less of need, however It takes putting your eyes in their perspective to understand why they act why they act. Maybe they have no living situation? Maybe a combination of stress and sucking in their own pride to stand in line with other homeless people? Besides working at the salvation army, as a kid I would also go with my church’s youth group and give out sandwiches to the homeless in the streets of San Francisco. We would ask them if they’d like us to pray for them, and If they said no, we’d say it’s totally fine and still give them their food. If they ever did want us to pray for them, we’d never close our eyes while praying because they could of just robbed us and run away. It’s not their fault or anyones fault because they only try to put themselves in a situation where they can survive. But this is where I think we actually can …show more content…
You can create your own institution built around helping others by just giving whatever you think you can give. In my own personal opinion I believe that a community that is more enthusiastic about doing their part, is a community that likely succeeds with a lowering percentage of homeless rates. If it’s not in your nature to go to church, then gather with friends / family and do anything to give back to the community. I believe that this is a problem that institutions can rise up to help treat. I feel this way especially, considering how many years i’ve been active in events similar towards the

In conclusion, Community is a rich series were any of the main characters could provide us with a complex example of cognitive development. The character of Jeff Winger arguably provides classic examples of Kohlberg’s (Evens et. al., 2010) stage 2 and a glimpses of stage 3. From his introduction as a fake spanish tutor, in the self interest of gaining a date, to where we leave him a few episodes later considering the views of others like activist Britta. In addition, the additional Perry’s cognitive theory gives us the Multiplicity aspect of Jeff’s behavior, as he listens more to his own inner voice that those in authority or around him.…

Sometimes I wonder why, out of every city, town, and suburb in the entire country of the United States, my grandmother chose to move to Lynn, Massachusetts. A city otherwise rich in history, but unluckily dubbed over by an ingloriously annoying jingle, “Lynn, Lynn, city of sin, you’ll never come out the way you came in.” I heard it chanted through elementary school hallways, mocked by middle school kids, and hummed by high schoolers. You would think its omnipresence would keep away travelers, but, then again, my grandmother didn’t speak English. She came over from the Dominican Republic thirty-six years ago, with my mother and her five other kids.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

One of the activities I do that is substantial to me is volunteering as a Kettle Host during Winter for the Salvation Army. Through Christmas Kettles, I collect donations from the society to help give back to the less fortunate in our community. What volunteering for the Salvation Army has taught me is that even the smallest effort can make a tremendous impact. When I first started off as a volunteer, I did not feel motivated enough to believe what I was doing would truly have an impact. I had this mindset which led me to believe that the happenings in our community did not concern me, although, I began to have a change of opinion as I kept volunteering.…

This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks.…
