The audio visual presentation of Bastion consists of magnificently composed soundtracks combined with beautifully immersive atmospheres. The atmospheres of the game consist of dire bogs, ruined cities, and dark forests. Levels are usually composed of many waves of enemies as the narrator describes the circumstances as well as the player’s actions. Due to the satisfying gameplay, immersive story, complex PvE conflicts, colorful graphics, and magnificent soundtracks, Bastion creates a pleasant experience for almost every kind of gamer and allows for no reason for change in regards to any of the elements chosen by the developers. Bastion was originally released to PC on steam where it quickly gained popularity. In a traditionally constructed videogame story, the player receives some exposition of a conflict and then takes control of a likeable and well-understood character they will be able to identify with. Dialogue, non-interactive sequences (referred to in the gaming industry as “cutscenes”), and character development drive the story, allowing the actual gameplay to be isolated to make it easier for developers to create a game that is not only compelling story-wise, but also fun to play. Details, exposition, and likeable characters draw players in so they feel investment in the fictional world of the game, allowing the player to forget their own world. Tension and suspense derived from the player’s investment in the game world then lead to a climactic…

Video games are arguably even less associated with storytelling than comics are, with some critics believing “that the video-game form is incompatible with traditional concepts of narrative” (Bissel, 93). Where the medium truly excels, however, is with its capacity for immersion. Where readers of books and viewers of movies are passive, gamers take an active role in their narratives. In games like Mass Effect this means making key decisions that affect the development of the plot, but in games like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted and The Last of Us, this…
