The themes of “Cranes” and “The Sniper” are similar due to the war tearing people apart, however, they are different because in “Cranes” the compassion prevails, while in “The Sniper” survival wins over compassion. Both stories themes show us how war reduces human life to nothing and how it tears apart families and friends but that family and friends come first. Over the years there have been multiple authors who have written war stories and their effects on individuals. The protagonists in both stories are soldiers of war but they fought in different wars. The narrative, “A Story of War and Change” by Reza Kiarash details the gruesome horror of the Iran-Iraq war through the experiences of the author as a paramedic within the Iranian army. What is immediately noticeable by the reader is how the author recounts his memory in short, staccato esque sentences. Evidence of such is provided when the author writes “ Yes, it is”. The lack of sentence sophistication helps immerse the reader into the atmosphere of the campaign the author is fighting in. As events escalate further within the story, the choppy sentences help create an aura of urgency for the reader.…

In Timothy Findlay's the wars, Robert Ross's journey of love, loss and war resembles a parody of romance. When someone thinks parody, they think of mimicking or imitating to criticize an initial piece of work. A parody can neutrally illuminate and/or simply comment upon a piece of work without necessarily mocking it. In this case, we see a parody of the typical romance; a strong male, a damsel in distress or perhaps some sort of wealth and the long fighting journey he takes to get to his goal. In the novel, Roberts journey starts because of loss and he is set out to forget this loss only to find something he didn’t know he was looking for, knowledge.…

Gone Home is a narrative exploration game by the company Fullbright that stars Kaitlin Greenbriar returning to her family home after being overseas.
