Memory is the process of encoding, storing and retrieving of memory. Encoding is where information is taken into our memory, storing is where we store information into our brains and retrieving is where we retrieve information from our brain. Although we are prone to memory reconstruction which is when we store our memories but recall it differently. This is largely due to our schemas but sometimes it may be due to other factors.
Bartlett’s War of the Ghosts study was conducted to further explain how our memory works. It was conducted using 20 English participants from a university who were told a Native American story. After a short period of time they were told to recall the story as accurately as possible.

In Bartlett’s study, his participants reconstructed their memories based due to schema. While in this replication study’s case, the participants reconstructed their memories based on the words used to describe the car crash.

This makes the study less generalizable due to the fact that teenagers do not represent the general population. A way to correct this is to conduct the study on people of different age groups. This would help the findings of the study more valid as it would be generalizable.
Another limitation of this study which makes it lacks validity is that the participants the experimenter tested might not have a good sense of speed. Of all the participants the experimenter tested, not a single person drives a car. This was possibly the reason why some of our participants guessed the speed way above what the experimenter expect them to. This problem can be easily corrected by testing only people who have experience being behind the wheel.
The last limitation of this replication study is its lack of realism. Participants need only view the video clips in this study rather than being present at a real life accident. The video clip might not have the same emotional impact of witnessing the crash live. The participants were then less likely to pay attention to the video clip and would be less motivated to be accurate in their judgement. This can be fixed by taking the participants to witness a real life car crash simulation and would then increase the reliability of their
