Banned Book Week Research Paper

Statistics say about 32% of all forcible rapes happen to 11-17 year olds and 29% occurred when the victims were 11 years old or younger. More than fifty percent of rapes happen to children 17 and under in the United States. Also, rape is a crime that is the most unreported in America according to (SourceB). Most people who get rapped usally need to get therapy and treatment because rape takes an emotional toll on human beings. There are books that are banned from teaching in schools but are available in the libraries. Although there are books banned, there is a time where teachers can talk about some of the books to their students. This is called Banned Book Week. This is a week to celebrate the amazing literature students miss out on. A book may contain horrid and offensive writing but it doesnt mean its not a great piece of literature and that people can not read it. Connie Bennett says, “ We use banned book week as an opportunity to celebrate freedom of expression”(Source 4). This week is important to students so they can understand different reality situations that take place. Although a novel or book may be nonfiction but it could contain events that could occur in the real world. Understanding these concepts can help someone in a similar situation. If students can't read these concepts, how are they going to broaden their education on topics like sex, rape, race and more before they enter the adult world? …show more content…
They had to read banned novels and books. The information taken from the studies concluded that reading banned novels have positive effects to these students. The results did not change their GPAs nor did they take part in violent activity. In fact, they engaged in more volunteer work and the books were “eye-opening”.Source E states that they study also shows emotional and moral growth in students after reading banned books and novels. The banning of books takes aways from learning
