Books were made for a reason, to be read. In the article “ Why are libraries still banning books? “ Newsweek states, “ As Justice William Douglas wrote for the U.S. Supreme Court 50 years ago in Griswold v. Connecticut The right of freedom of speech and press includes not only the right to utter or to print, but the right to distribute, the right to receive, the right to read and freedom of inquiry.” I like this statement, because it really stands out to me. It shows that we, by law, have the right to read and speak and we should be able to read what we would like. We should not have a book we would like to read taken away from us, just because one person doesn't want to read it or doesn't want someone else to. The decision of what book a person would like to read should be up to their parents, or themselves. “ George Bernard Shaw wrote this quote, and I totally agree with him. I've seen so many books be banned, and some for no reason. But the books that people like to read, always somehow end up being banned. If everyone just keeps banning books because they don't believe it is appropriate, what will there be left to read? Not everyone agrees with everything, and not everyone enjoys the same book. Everyone enjoys different things, which can reflect on what they read or watch. But if someone takes away your ability to read a certain book that you really want to read, how would you feel? This is why we should not ban books, they were all written for a reason. Authors want their books to be read, and if every book is banned there will be nothing left to read. Shaw is saying that with all these books being banned, the only books we have left to read are the ones we don't exactly want to read. Every book needs action and something to hook and catch your attention, but those are the books that end up being banned.
Every author takes a lot of time making a book, it's not easy and it's not a fast process. Authors make books for our entertainment so why ban them?
