A simple advertisement for BOTOX Cosmetic depicts a close-up face shot of an “actual patient after treatment,” with her face turned slightly to the side so that the audience can see how successful the results of the procedure are. Her face is free of crow’s feet and frown lines between the eyebrows, just as the procedure promises, and one can only assume that a few touchups were made to the image; despite the wonderful results of this one patient, the horrifying list of possible complications and problems give some doubt to the idea of this procedure being safe, so the marketers need the patient to be persuasive. “Reimagine,” the ad reads in a broad, bold text. Why do women feel the need to get rid of frown lines or crow’s feet? All living beings express emotions and do things that wear out their skin, and wrinkles are, if anything, the proof of how one has experienced and celebrated or dealt with conflict throughout their life. Deeper set wrinkles are caused by more use, by more experiences; set into the faces of both men and women, they harbor untold stories and even bring back memories. It’s the one thing that gives an aged person the wisdom of life. For some reason, that isn’t the definition of beauty. Money, power, and youthfulness are, and it’s an all or none kind of system now. And females are competitive about their looks, far more than men are. All women are trying to look younger, trying to look the most fashionable, and in essence, trying to look exactly the same. And companies get off on it; “the management and enhancement of the body is a gold mine for consumerism, and one whose treasures are inexhaustible” (Bordo 172). An article in MORE magazine talks about the process of “slow” anti-aging and its annual costs: Between the glycolic acid peels, muscle-relaxing toxins, hyaluronic acid fillers, laser and light treatments, and skin tightening, the yearly expenses of reverse aging can reach twenty thousand dollars (96).
