Australia’s forced sterilization can actually harm the disabled, using their most common procedure. The most common procedure for women is called tubal ligation, or having one’s ‘tubes tied’ (Stoppler C, 2014). “Side effects of tubal ligation may include infection, bleeding (hemorrhage), and any effects or complications associated with being under general anesthesia” (Stoppler C, 2014). For disabled patients, undergoing a procedure like this could be extremely dangerous. Another danger is the procedure itself going wrong. “When women get pregnant after being sterilized, about 1 out of 3 has a pregnancy that develops in a fallopian tube. This is called ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is serious and may be life threatening.” (Sterilization for Women, 2014). Actions are being made to justify the women effected, but nothing has been put into place. “’People with disability in Australia are frequently subject to treatment that may constitute torture, or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, including persistent and severe violence and abuse, forced or coerced non-therapeutic sterilization, long-term neglect of basic human needs, and painful and degrading behaviour modification techniques or restrictive practices,’ PWDA says.” (Disability, 2014).
