It’s celebrating rape, celebrating murders. The first of January 1901 when the states federated to become a country is was loosely called Australia before then it became official. This was now the nation called Australia, the commonwealth of Australia. That should be Australia day. To many aboriginal Australians there is little to celebrate it is a remembrance of a deep loss. Loss of their independent right to their land, loss of family, loss of their right to practice their culture. “Australia day is 26th January, a date whose only importance is to mark the coming of the white people in 1788. It isn’t a date that is particularly pleasing for the aborigines”. Says Michael Mansell. “The British were armed to the teeth and from the moment they stepped foot into their country, the slaughter and dispossession of aborigines began.” We don’t even seem to be celebrating the event of January 26th at all. They are celebrating the good things that happened well after that.
The aboriginal Australians have been asking for the date to be changed. Kevin Rudd had made a promise to them that if he wins the election he will change the date, Rudd won the election, he broke the promise he had made and said “to our indigenous leaders and those who call for a change to our national day, let me say a simple, respectful but straightforward no.” It wasn’t simple
