It began as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day, promoting Native American culture and commemorating the history of Native American peoples. In places/ cities where a large amount of Mexican-Americans live it has been decided that they would boycott Columbus day with the new found Indigenous Peoples Day, t he cities participating in Indigenous Peoples Day include: Berkeley, California; Albuquerque, New Mexico; St. Paul, Minnesota; Portland, Oregon; Olympia, Washington; and Seattle, Washington [list from http://wgntv.com/2015/10/12/some-cities-replacing-columbus-day/]. Some of Columbus’ infamous crimes are as followed: He went back on his own reward offer to the first person who spotted land, he claimed and reported that the natives of the Caribbean Islands were cannibals despite knowing full well this was a lie, he enslaved and tortured the native people. While enslavement was not unusual in that day, his level of disregard for their welfare surpassed even the loose standards of the day, he quite literally worked people to death, he had horrific punishments for the least of crimes and he had dead natives butchered and sold as dog food.
