• 1966 – The Auckland Airport was officially opened by Governor General Sir Bernard Ferguson in January 29th. The opening attracted over 200,000 members of the public because they held a pageant, the ‘Grand Air Pageant’. This was held over three days.

• 2008 – A welcoming carved gateway that passengers witness as they arrive into Auckland. This carving is called the Tainui, it symbolises a spiritual portal. The Tainui is a popular figure at the airport, it attracts a lot of passengers to it. It also makes the airport very unique as it has an impact on the Maori culture here in New Zealand.
• 2011 – Auckland airport was filled with Tongan supporters as they welcomed the Tongan Rugby team. This was the year that New Zealand held the Rugby World cup and a lot of passengers from all over the world flew here for it.
• 2014 – Auckland Airport announced its 30 year vision for the airport of the future which was to combine both international and domestic terminals into one.

Since being built, it is destined to continue its growth. Auckland airports vision for the years to come is to build stages, this will increase the number of flights and passengers that come into NZ. The future for this is to make Auckland Airport a hub for travelers and for them to have a pleasant and enjoyable experience. The founders of Auckland Airport has developed a 30 year plan to make it one that New Zealanders take pride of. The airport is still yet to improve since its opening and they hope to support other airlines to be successful by building a world class airport. By 2044 they hope to welcome 260,000 flights and 40 million passengers which will further develop New Zealand’s economy by having all these international visitors fly in.
