Tarrant Area Food Bank: Case Study

The Ambassador Program held a can food drive throughout the months of November and January with the proceeds going to the Tarrant Area Food Bank. The volunteers come to a consensus every winter since 2012 to how to give back to the community and 2015 was no exception. They expect to collect an estimated 700 to 1,000 pounds in can goods and non-perishable items .

Ambassador Program Shift Supervisor Cristina Fraker spearheaded the effort. She said it was something she became more passionate about after meeting a Tarrant Area Food Bank (TAFB) representative during a volunteer management conference where she heard about the work that they do.

The TAFB distributes fresh, frozen and nonperishable food items to the hungry and needy of the community through donations. The food industry, food drives and local volunteer organizations contribute to those donations. Food Bank volunteers sort, package and send the donated items off to their network of partner agencies who serve children, the elderly, people experiencing homelessness and other Texans in need.

“More than half of Ambassadors are elderly and on a fixed income so that’s when it hit home and sprung the idea of getting involved.”

Airport Ambassadors are often on the front lines when it comes to Customer Experience. They are constantly interacting with traveling customers, directing them to their connecting flights and making suggestions to visit various Airport amenities DFW offers.

They do all of that and a lot more, voluntarily.

“They are donating more than their time and effort as Airport Ambassadors, but contributing to a great need, out of the kindness of their hearts, for one of our local communities through this food drive,” said Fraker. “It definitely shows the true spirit of a volunteer and goes to show that every bit does

To begin, in my community I have come to respect those who help others in food pantries and in special needs schools through personal experience. One day my mom and I took a new route to my grandparents house and we came across the RCS Food Pantry. The next day we pulled up and talked to this sweet lady and she said that we could help package food for the homeless, so every Monday we would go and help out, it was a touching experience to see the look the homeless gave us when we gave them the food. One man I talked to was in the military and wasn't able to get a job because of his PTSD, it was sad the way he ended up but I vowed to help in the ways I knew how.…

The contents of the purse were things such as lotion, soap, deodorant, feminine products, and a protein bar. These things are essential to women and women who do not have the funds to purchase them might not be able to get them in any other way. We then delivered the purses to the Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington for the staff there to distribute them to the ladies that need them the most. We were able to have the opportunity to sit down with the ladies and talk to them about their struggles and hear some of their inspiring stories.…

This may be true for many people and some may be walking around our campus so we should have Russell support our local pantry by donating to this cause. On the other hand, the Milpitas Food pantry is there to provide our community and together with the Jack Emery Food Drive, they will assist them by gathering all the meals needed. With this in mind, AVID is more than happy to have this opportunity to research more about the drive and to lead and spread knowledge on this subject, in addition, the Jack Emery Food Drive helped us develop more comprehension on how they function and work.
