Some might say that Atticus is not a heroic figure because he defended an African American. Atticus wants to defend a black because he is not a racist man and he thinks that “people generally see what they look for and, hear what the listen for”(176) Atticus understands that people only trust the articles that they think is right, and they will never change even if they know they are wrong. People always think that they know what is right but when really they could be totally wrong. Most people will not let someone tell them something other than what they believe. Atticus “thinks there is only one kind of folks. Folks”(177) there is really only one type of people that are accepted in the society. The people that are racist against blacks and think no man that is African American should be able to beat a white man. Even though there is less segregation people have their minds so set on the differences that they do not even notice the similarities. Atticus faces the challenges between himself and others and thinks “they’re certainly entitled to think that,and they are entitled to full respect for their opinions but before I can live with other folks I have to live with myself”’(178) Atticus has to deal with what he believes first before he even starts about thinking about other people's opinions. Smart and truthful, Atticus worries and continues to keep his mind straight on what he thinks, before he starts thinking about what other people think. Atticus is a extremely honest man and he tells everyone the truth no matter how brutal it is like when he says “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash” (180) Atticus explains how that white men are favored over black men, but to him they are all the same. Atticus defends a black man even when he is a white man, and everyone would expect him to defend white people only. Atticus is different than everyone else, because he is not racist and knows that everyone deserves the same rights, and should never be treated differently because of the color of their skin. Atticus also has to on top of everything else he has to take care of his two children. Atticus daughter, Scout does not understand poor and rich, and black and white.
