Atticus cannot be Simply Summed up as a Racist One line that is always used to describe the early 1900s is “that person is Racist”. This doesn’t truly tell the story of what was going on. A good example of this in TKM when Atticus is bringing Calpurnia home she sits in the Back. To understand this idea a backstory is needed. In TKM Atticus is a lawyer who defends a black man accused of rape. He puts much more effort in than any other lawyer would have, especially in the south. Some may stop and say this is merely an example of Atticus being racist but it is much more. Calpurnia is an example of a mockingbird who needs to be protected not harmed. It was not until the 1960s until society’s views on racism began to change this was due to the civil rights movement, and people like Rosa Parks and Dr. Martin Luther King jr. Mr. King once said that in the end we will not remember the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends. This thought truly speaks to the idea of fitting in until change can be made. By sitting in the back Calpurnia does not hear her enemies but rather hears the silence and tranquility of her friend Mr. Atticus Finch. Atticus is not like this at all it is easy to tell from the way he treats Tom Robinson and his family he treat him like no one else would. It’s also easy to see he is not a racist person by the way he talks to his kids. One example of this is when he said “As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of our life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it- whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that man is white trash. His word choice shows that he is not racist and that he loves all. This shows that he is not a racist but society was racist. At this time it was custom for African Americans to sit in the back and have different places. The idea of ending discrimination requires full support from the people. The south was not ready for this during the 1930s. Everything takes time but people have to find a way to push through it as Mr. King once said “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward”.
