A brief look at the city of Asheville North Carolina from the 1700s to the present.
The history of Asheville begins early in the 1500s with the Cherokee Indians occupying the area. In 1776, a force of colonists destroyed many Cherokee villages in the area, which later lead to the Trail of Tears. As the amount of Cherokee Indians in the area became few, Irish/Scottish pioneers immigrated to the area and become the first settlers to live in the area. A pioneer family in 1784 located to a valley, now called Buncombe County and live in the Swannanoa Valley region known as “Eden Land.” A permanent settlement was established and in 1797 the area received its name, Asheville, in honor of the Governor Samuel Ashe (Asheville Now). In 1828 the Buncombe Turnpike was completed after four year of labor which helped the economy of the area and also marked the period of the first African American migration to North Carolina as workers for the construction (History Timeline of Asheville). This turnpike attracted many wealthy vacationers who began to build summer homes in Western North Carolina. The buildings are known for there beautiful architectural styles ranging from Victorian to Modern designs. In the late 1920s to the early 1930s the Depression struck the area hard causing the largest bank in NC to fold, fortunes to disappear and families to lose their homes, but the City of Asheville did not file for bankruptcy, instead they decided to pay of the debt it owed, taking almost fifty years to complete. New construction did not occur during that time, which ended up saving many historical buildings from being torn down and rebuilt (United
