Swann was born to Samuel and Elizabeth Swann on October 31, 1704 (5). Swann's father held several high offices, his paternal grandfather served on the Virginia Council, and his maternal grandfather was a member of the North Carolina Assembly. Samuel Swann was one of four children from his father's second marriage. He is the namesake of both his father and a half-brother from his father's first marriage who died in 1702 (5). When Samuel Swann's father passed away, his mother remarried Alexander Goodlatt; however, he too passed away, allowing her to marry Maurice Moore, whom she moved with to the Cape Fear region. In 1727, Samuel Swann married Jane Jones, the daughter of Frederick Jones, the former chief justice of the colony (5). Samuel and Jane had two children, also named Samuel and Jane. The Swanns lived in Cape Fear surrounded by their extended family on a luxurious plantation named The Oaks. When the Anglican Church was established in the area, Samuel became a communicant of St. James Parish in Wilmington, North Carolina (5). Swann was always encompassed by men of great political power. In addition to the achievements of his father and grandfathers, his half brothers each served as Speaker of the Assembly. Swann himself received an excellent education in law and training in practical surveying that would serve him well in his future

At first, the people in this town faced various hardships against the Indians, but eventually, “the people were ready to turn their hearts and hands to peaceful productivity on their farms” ().…

In this essay, I am going to give my views on if the village of Happisburgh should get defenses to stop the village from getting destroyed by the destructive waves destroying the soft rock making the cliff erode. The cliff erodes at the rate of 40-45 feet or approximately 15 meters each year and in the last 15 years 26 houses have been destroyed, because of this house prices have dropped to worth only £1. Happisburgh is a village that is located at the edge of a cliff located in the county of Norfolk and is the home to over 850 people. While North Carolina was one of the original thirteen colonies, a new state after the American Revolution, and a state in the antebellum south, it has always been unique in its political footing. This is quite an appropriate quote to describe North Carolina. Writer Harry L. Watson describes North Carolina as the “Rip Van Winkle” state.…

During 1700s America, most colonists lived in rural farming villages on their own property. In the North, there was a focus on family farms whereas in the south, there were many large plantations with less of a focus on the family aspect and a much heavier use of slavery. The middle colonies, like Virginia for example, were sort of a middle ground where these two traditions mixed and new ones were introduced. During this time period, it is fascinating to contrast these regions. Without carefully examining similarities, like the way they are run governmentally, and the differences, like geography, it would be nearly impossible to understand the lives that these colonists led.…
