The passing of House Bill 2 (HB2) in North Carolina has been surrounded by controversy. Some groups have stated that the bill is designed to protect citizens of the state and therefore needs remain law. However, others believe that the bill is transphobic, homophobic, does not represent the state in the best light, and needs to be repealed. Both groups defend their positions by saying that the action they would like to see is the best course of action for the state and its citizens. Ethically, utilitarianism can be applied to the debate over what should be done with respect to HB2 in North Carolina, as it is designed to maximize the happiness of the majority. The General Assembly of North Carolina passed HB2 after a series of events began…
When the Europeans first came to, what is now known as North Carolina, they struggled to make it and eventually ended up settling in Virginia because of numerous reasons, political, geography, and culture. The Virginia colony finally figured out a way to turn profit and the settlers began settling in North Carolina again. Because North Carolina lacked a deep port they relied heavily on their surrounding colonies to get food and supplies, as well as more immigrants to work. America began to…
Oppression is common throughout history; resistance is common, also. North Carolina finds its place in the American narrative both as a British colony and later as a state, but it has its own individuality in how that transition was made. While many fellow colonists viewed the inhabitants of North Carolina as backwards or simple, this did not impede the development of a culture that was slowly becoming more diverse and growing as immigration drastically raised the population over the course of…
North Carolina is truly a unique breed in terms of being a state. While North Carolina was one of the original thirteen colonies, a new state after the American Revolution, and a state in the antebellum south, it has always been unique in its political footing. From the beginning, North Carolina has tried to become the best version of itself, but as the old adage says, “the more things change the more they stay the same”. This is quite an appropriate quote to describe North Carolina. Writer…
Sadly, it was checked out until January of 2016. I didn’t even know it was possible to do so. Regardless, I was back on the search. I turned to the book The Carolina Gold Rush by Bruce Roberts. This contained an interesting nugget of information. In the mid 1800’s when the gold rush was active in Charlotte. Charlotte became the location for a US mint and began mining gold coins in 1836. Charlotte had its own mint mark of “c” on the coins produced. It was convenient to mint in Charlotte due to…
From bluegrass, folk and Native American music in the mountains, to beach music on the coast, North Carolina is a state that has an extensive variety of traditional music. The main research focus is on the historic, geographic and musical aspects of the North Carolina Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian Trail passes through western North Carolina, and the Blue Ridge Mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain range. Throughout the section of Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, there…
"Roy Cooper, The One" Roy Cooper is fighting to become the new Governor of North Carolina, and he's well qualified for the role. Cooper has been North Carolina's Attorney General, since 2001. In this role Roy Cooper has facilitated the process of bringing justice to North Carolinians. Before being elected as North Carolina's General Attorney, Roy Cooper was one of North Carolina's voices in the Senate. Prior to being the General Attorney and a Senator, Roy Cooper served in the House of…
have made tremendous progress for women, African Americans, and other minorities, but we are still in the midst of full rights for the LGBT community. It would be unrealistic to say that this community now has complete equality, especially when states like North Carolina pass laws allowing discrimination and refusal of treatments to the LGBT community. It is our social responsibility, as a country, to ensure the LGBT community receive the same rights and equalities that we have been pushing so…
Since coming to college, I have noticed that not all majors have an equal representation of both men and women. North Carolina State University is well known for diversity on campus and their attempts to raise awareness but I often feel that gender is often overlooked when diversity is discussed. Engineering has been and still is a male dominated field of study. Women have often been overlooked and seen as incapable of this type of work but in reality this is not true. Since NC State has a very…
In 1968, the Marching Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina (UNC) released a 7-inch 33 ½ rpm record consisting of eight school songs including “Here Comes Carolina,” “Carolina Fight Song,” and UNC’s alma mater “Hark the Sound.” Past UNC students wrote and composed over half of the fight songs featured on the album, and the student marching band performs the same songs today, nearly five decades later. In fact, the band and fans conclude each game with “Hark the Sound,” linking arms and…
