The Lost Colony of Roanoke

Sometimes there is just no explanation for how or why somethings happen. I can imagine that is how John White felt when he returned to Roanoke and he couldn’t find his family. John White and a group of adventurous people came to America from England to settle in the new world. They met with many hardships while trying to set up their colony. They were unprepared for how hard it would be to raise crops, build shelter and the general day to day living. As the people of the colony were running out of supplies, John White sailed back to England to get some supplies. When he arrived, there was a war with Spain and England. Queen Elizabeth told John that she could not let

Another theory is that the colonists built boats and tried sailing back to England themselves. This theory seems extremely far fetched since they had no supplies to use on their trip back or even enough material to build the needed ships to make such a long and dangerous trip. However, items used by the English colonists have been located in two different locations some 50 miles from Roanoke. Mark Horton, an archaeologist at Britain’s Bristol University states that,“The evidence is that they assimilated with the Native Americans but kept their goods,” This may prove that the colonists joined with the Native Americans and may have survived.

To this day the mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke is one that can not be explained. People are so interested in the Lost Colony that people perform a play every year. “Since 1937, this mystery has been relived every year in a play called The Lost Colony. It is performed outdoors at Wayside Theatre at the Fort Raleigh in North Carolina.” We know that the Colony did exist, but no one knows for sure what really happened to the people of

I believe that when Governor John White left Roanoke Island for England to get supplies, the colonists were expecting him to return back to the island in a few months. However, when the colonists did not hear anything from him or see him return after more than a year they began to think that White would not be returning to the island. In 1588, Spanish soldiers received reports that the English were establishing a new colony in the New World. The colonists, not wanting to be attacked and killed by the spanish like French in 1562, decided they had to do something. A decision was made to split up the colony into two and both groups would go their own separate ways.…

Some of the most popular theories include the colonists being exterminated, that they were wiped out. Another theory involves Maneo's tribe—Maneo was a Native American who was seen as a friend to the English. Maneo was taken to England by John White to discuss what life was like in the Americas. The theory claims that the colonists may have gone to Maneo's tribe to seek shelter and food after supplies had run out. Another theory is that the Roanoke colonists went to what is known today as the Lumberton area—this theory states that the Lumbee Native Americans married some of the settlers from the lost colony.…

“An unusual kind of archeological detective work yields new insights into the spread of culture through colonial New England. It also tests the science of archaeology for accuracy” (Deetz, p. x). Deetz’s method is finding evidence and testing it to see if it’s accurate, but how are you suppose to know if it’s accurate without documents to help back it up? Even though it maps the spread of colonization, there is more to the colony then just the transformations. It is about the way it is built and set up to accommodate the unified environment of economic, social and political knowledge.…
