Edward Albee is an important playwright who manages through his way of writing to address the mind of the audience. In his play The American Dream, Albee tries to remind people that they must refine their own version of the American Dream, or their society would be completely damaged. His intelligence is presented from his choice of the title of the play. He uses an ironical title to refer to the corruption in the American society. The American Dream that people want is completely corrupted. In the play, Grandma identifies the Young Man as “The American Dream” (151). He represents the future, but in fact this man is completely corrupted by the cruelty of the society.

They send for Mrs. Barker who is the representative of the agency from which they adopt “the Bumble of joy” (139). Albee mentions that Mrs. Barker is married, but does not give any information about her husband or the kind of relation between them as she is “professional woman” (120).
Mel Gussow believes this play can be considered as an autobiographical play (100). This is because that Albee is adopted after his birth. He has known he was adopted at the age of six, in that age he began his alienation. His mother was dominant one; she was heartless and controlled everything. His father was distant and uninvolved in anything. All these events that he has faced in his life are represented through his plays (Gould 280 – 281).
When Mrs. Barker arrives, she does not know why they ask her for coming; actually she forgets everything about them. Only Grandma remembers everything, so she tells the entire story of Mrs. Barker from which the audience knows who is Mrs. Barker and the reason for which she visits them.
