It was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994, and lasted for 10 years. As was the attempt to renew the bill in 2004, it was met with opposition when it was originally proposed in Congress. Dianne Feinstein authored the original bill as well as one of the renewals in 2003 and 2004. Efforts were also made to renew the bill and make it stronger in late 2012 after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut which took the lives of 28 people. The shooter, Adam Lanza, used a Bushmaster M4-Type assault rifle and a Glock 20SF semi-automatic pistol. Feinstein’s attempt to renew the bill in 2012 was also, as usual, met with opposition. The National Rifle Association lobbied against the bill and donated heavily to political candidates opposed to it. It was defeated by a vote of 40 to 60 in the Senate. Feinstein was disappointed in her colleagues for caving to the pressure of the NRA and not keeping our country
