How Beauty Pageants Effect Children and Women Why do girls find beauty pageants so important to their social status and popularity? For the longest time, girls have competed from ages new born all the way up to their twenties in beauty contests. Most of the time, it’s the parents who get them first started in the industry, but the amount of money and time they spend on pageants is ridiculous! Why is it so important for girls to win contests for beauty, and not for their true selves? Beauty pageants are starting to be banned in schools because of their bad rap. They are just an ugly activity that isn't beneficial or helpful to anyone. Lastly, pageants fat shame women and make women feel bad about themselves. The other view point of this topic is Beauty Pageants aren't bad for children and girls, and is beneficial to all. When Natalie Benson first started off in the pageant world , she didn’t have the best experience. She was good, but she was being bullied by other girls in her age group of competing. They made an “Anti-Natalie” campaign and were never nice. Even though Natalie suffered this bullying, she says she grew from it. She competed in Miss America, and said that with the help of Miss America she created self goals for herself and it encouraged her to to chase her educational dreams (Stern n.p.). What pageants should really be focusing on is the beauty inside and not outside. The fight against beauty pageants is growing a lot of support, and the fight continues. Schools are banning them, harassment against children is being fought, and change in the way we see true beauty is changing as well. Society needs to realize that beauty isn't what is on the outside. People are being hurt by this “past time” and things need to change. Beauty pageants are building self esteem, they are the opposite. Children and women develop depression and eating disorders. John Hopkins ran a study that stated Miss America participates since 1970 had such a low body mass that they were placed under the undernourished column of the World Health Organization (Huey 1). Beauty pageants need to come to an end for not just women and children , but for the future of Americans and the whole world. Without beauty pageants, the definition of beauty would mean something complete different. There is so much more to a child or woman than a look, it’s what inside that
