In the book, Taking Sides by John T. Rourke, he opens up the argument concerning whether U.S. forces should continue to fight in Afghanistan. The first side of the argument is, yes, U.S forces should continue to fight in Afghanistan. The yes portion of the argument is discussed by our 44th President, Barack Obama. To introduce his speech, he recalled why we went to war with Afghanistan in the first place, “On September 11, 2001, 19 men hijacked four airplanes and used them to murder nearly 3,000 people. The goals of the Afghanistan war as stated by Obama are, “to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and to prevent its capacity to threaten America and our allies in the future. To meet that goal, we will pursue the following objectives within Afghanistan. We must deny al Qaeda a safe haven. We must reverse the Taliban’s momentum and deny it the ability to overthrow the government. And we must strengthen the capacity of Afghanistan’s security forces and government so that they can take lead responsibility for Afghanistan’s future.” (Rourke, 2011, p.237). To further explain what Obama means is that we cannot leave Afghanistan until all of the above goals are reached because if one or more is not reached then there could be negative consequences in the future. The last goal is the most important and hard to reach goal. Rebuilding and strengthening the Afghanistan government and military so it can take care and protect itself is
