Those who believe NATO to be obsolete have criticized it by saying there is no longer strategic purpose, it is burdening the U.S. financially, it doesn’t give Europe the responsibility for its own defense, and countries are joining that don’t necessarily need defense. On the other end of the controversy, people claim that NATO embodies multilateralism in an increasingly interdependent world, and that NATO is a customer to the U.S. weapons industry, which is important. This means that the more NATO expands, the more weapons are sold. Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorsky identifies 5 reasons he believes NATO should stay in existence: the transition costs would be problematic, Germany and France would dominate Europe, Europe could align itself with other powers once they are no longer allied with the U.S., Europe would more frequently say no to America about certain international issues, and there would no longer be a workable coalition between the U.S. and Europe, meaning they would reinvent NATO soon. The question of how can NATO better protect our energy arose when they took notice to the global oil market losing a million barrels a day, which prompted NATO to add energy security to its agenda. NATO decided that they could begin to protect energy sources including oil fields, pipelines and sea routes that transported unrefined oil. They would not be able to control all o this, however, they can control points of heavy traffic like the gulf and key drilling points. Some problems that they could face include tensions with Russians and countries that are non-NATO countries deploying in the gulf.
