Crystal Allen author of How Lamar’s Bad Prank Won a Bubba-Sized Trophy is trying to portray thirteen-year-old Lamar as a confident self-proclaimed maddest, baddest, most spectacular bowler ever at Striker’s Bowling Paradise. Lamar’s summer is about to begin and with it comes the best bowling games, the opportunity in getting a job, and will finally get the girl of his dreams. Not to mention that his bowling idol Bubba Sanders is going to make an appearance at his favorite bowling place to announce the winners of the writing competition and the winners will get a special bowling ball. Will Lamar’s summer be everything that he expected?…
Jermaine Lamarr Cole born January 28th, 1985 is a true inspiration for young adults going down the wrong path and tries to portray that image for himself in many of his songs and videos. When looking at J Cole he portrays himself a lot differently than what his words speaks in some of his videos but in the video “Crooked Smile” he does show how much he wants to change today’s youth and society. This video is what I chose to analyze for this paper because it has so many different meanings between the video and lyrics. It has been interpreted into many meanings, but the main message J Cole is trying to produce and the message perceived by myself and many others is to rethink the War on drugs and what it is doing to today’s society. This challenge…

Racial issues have been prevalent in the United States since the beginning, due to the history of violent colonization, the European view of colored inferiority, and the institution of slavery. All of these events left an enormous legacy on the notable racial relations of today. Representation in both the political and social realm are important in establishing the identity and unification of African-Americans. Gun violence and police brutality are terrorizing black communities and igniting giant social movements across the country. Usage of technology and social media have become influential components of the demonstrations and broadcasting of injustices.…
Though now I have analyzed it very deeply and thoroughly. I understand the point he is trying to make and it might one of the greatest pieces I have ever heard. Lastly, I have learned even if you are degraded over and over and told no and that you’re nothing, that you are hearing lies and that you have to define the odds and prove those people wrong and that’s what Kendrick Lamar has done and continues to…
In the song “Boogieman”, artist Childish Gambino uses the allegory of the boogieman and a myriad of sound clips to present an embedded, but clear message on police brutality and the experiences of black people in the United States of America. Though the message of the song is entrenched in heavy themes, the track is upbeat and laced with funky seventies guitar riffs and groovy bass lines. It is so groove-able, that upon first listen one might not even catch some of the themes being laid out. The clear sound of a police siren at 2:49 is what alerted my attention to the song’s broader message. From there I went back to listen again and pay closer attention to the lyrics of the song.…
Does the colonized mind really exist? A colonized mind is the oppressed mindset of groups of people who have had aspects of their past or present taken and changed. The colonized mind is an idea that is highly debated but the matter of fact is, symptoms of this mindset affect most colonized people. A colonized mind is constantly at war with itself due to the internalized oppression that comes with it and many struggle to find confidence in themselves and their identity. Many want liberation from this mentality and the system that furthers the oppressive psychology.…
On June 30th, 2017 JAY-Z released the music video for his song The Story of O.J. on Tidal as a soft of teaser trailer to his latest album 4:44. In lieu of shooting a traditional music video, JAY-Z opted instead to create an animated video that employs a style that calls back to flagrantly racist portrayals of African Americans in classic animated short films such as All This and Rabbit Stew and Hittin' the Trail for Hallelujah Land. After its release, the music video was met with both universal acclaim and extreme controversy primarily due to its striking visuals and explicit lyrics. Visually speaking this music video contains multiple visual elements and devices such as symbolism, metaphor, and allusion in order to portray its message. Overall,…
This video used concepts of discrimination that African Americans have received for many generations. Its discuss someone who has always had to fight for what equality in today’s society. The video brings in topics such as apartheid and racial issues that have created outcry in the black community. Lamar for instances brings in the concept of someone wanting there 40 acres and a mule because of what they’ve had to experience. Its shows how people want something for all of the years that they’ve had to deal with their circumstances.…
Throughout history, music has been a popular way to express opinions and feelings about a subject. The band effectively expressed how they felt about these rich inequal individuals through a rap song. All and all, there is more to the text than what an average person could analyze such as the metaphors the band incorporated in the…
With the expand popularization of the computer and laptop as well as the growth of the digital technologies, there are much more innovation about/on the sound and image editing which provide people with grand possibilities and easier approaches on manipulating other people’s voices and images. One of the approaches is called “digital ventriloquism”. However, as most of the technological approaches, “digital ventriloquism” contains various branches due to the different degrees of the replacing or editing on the people’s visualization and acoustics. In this paper, I will use two video clips from the YouTube “Brian Williams Raps ‘Rapper's Delight’” and “Hitler Sings the Jeffersons Theme” to identify the subcategories of the “digital ventriloquism”:…
“Waiting for Superman” is a song by the band Daughtry. The lyrics tell a story about a girl waiting for the right guy, or ‘superman.’ But while the song lyrics seem focused on the girl, a damsel in distress; the music video accompanying it focuses on telling the story of a man—the story’s superman. The story this video tells is heavily influenced by the pop-culture definition of a superhero, developing a comic-book-esque origin story for this song’s main characters. This underlying theme of comic books and superheroes is conveyed not only in the story told, but also in the portrayal of the characters, the emotion expressed by the setting and lighting, and lyrics of the song.…
With their witty and compelling book “Our America,” LeAlan and Lloyd show how the voices of underrepresented African Americans contribute significantly to our understanding about American racial relationship. I want to deliver their political messages to both the authorities and the general audience. By presenting double-meaning songs which could be absorbed in various depth level, my soundtrack will illuminate both the book’s main theme of reality, hope, inequality and give voices to African Americans. The themes of reality and hope appear inside the innocent narration of LeAlan and Lloyd about their lives in Ida B. Wells.…
This political study will define the current problem of police violence as a future implication of Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. This film defines the increasing racial tensions between the white Italian community and the lower-class African community in the late 1980s. Lee (1989) presents the racial bigotry between Italians and African Americans, which culminates in a series of violent encounters with the NYC police department. Incidents of police violence against African Americans is a major theme in this film, since the Italian characters are often exempt from the level of violence brought forth against black people.…
The song “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar has grown to be very popular. Many people interpret this song as a song about hope for the future. Both the song and the music video have received enthusiastic responses, highlighting the message that was related to social outburst at the time in regards to racism towards African-Americans. The song “Alright” has been directly associated with the Black Lives Matter movement not only because of the message it delivers but in many instances multiple people started singing the lyrics “we gon’ be…
