Despite the fact that, arguably, the mixtape track form contributes no deeper way to tell the story and largely only serves as a cool and inventive way to tell a story. The story that Brown tells begins with a woman who is alone. Through the song titles we learn that she has entered into a relationship, gets married and begins to suspect that her partner is cheating on her. While all this can be inferred from the song titles, the problem with the story is that we cannot truly empathize with the characters or even examine the situation that the two characters find themselves in at anything other than face value. The readers are almost unable to think critically about the story because of how little information is presented by the…

This essay examines how race and gender are portrayed in a music video Anaconda by Nicki Minaj from 2014. The issue of representation of the Black community and women is significant, considering a huge impact hip-hop culture has on young people’s perception of social matters (Emerson, 2002, p. 115). Minaj is an influential figure in popular culture - her album The Pinkprint, which is supported by the single Anaconda, debuted at number one on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart as well as a number two on the US Billboard 200 chart (Caulfield, 2014; Mendizabal, 2014). The fact that the music video was intended for children is inappropriate and ethically questionable. Even though the message is positive, the vulgar language and offensive content should not be intended for children. Children are very impressionable, the content could possibly encouraging the behaviors portrayed, instead of discouraging them. I think maybe if the music video was solely intended for a older mature audience the video might have sparked less controversy. However, the fact that some adult viewers were offended shows the video would still involve some type of controversy.…
