Antiseptics are used to treat and prevent infection on skin, but many antiseptic products use different active ingredients to kill or slow the growth of bacteria. Several commonly used antiseptics contain active ingredients include isopropyl alcohol, iodine, chlorohexidine gluconate, and hydrogen peroxide. The use for products with these ingredients also depends on the type of wound since certain active ingredients have different mechanisms for killing bacteria. However, a growing concern in modern medicine is how bacteria can become resistant to antimicrobial agents such as antiseptics. When bacteria is exposed to low concentrations of antimicrobial agents, some of the bacteria can survive and mutate to produce a better line of defense against the active chemicals in antiseptics. Theoretically, the antiseptic, when applied again, would be less effective in treating and preventing an infection. A similar phenomenon has already been seen with the use of antibiotics, which is a medicine that destroys or inhibits microbes; the overuse of antibiotics has led to fatal diseases like Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) and Methycillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). Some fear that antiseptics are the next chemical substances to be affected in the fight against harmful bacteria. The first time I truly began to notice the importance of antiseptics was during my sophomore year in AP European History class. One day, we were learning about how Joseph Lister was the first to…
