Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma or also known as (ATC) is located on the gene NKX2-1 which is found on chromosome 14q13.3. ATC is a very rapid and aggressive type of thyroid cancer. Anaplastic invades the thyroid gland that’s located at the base of the throat right below the adam’s apple. Your thyroid produces hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight. Anaplastic is the least common thyroid cancer out of the 4 types, anaplastic occurs to people of the age of 60 and older. This rate is 2 times higher for women than men, but fewer than 10% are younger than the age of 50yrs. Most patients contract anaplastic thyroid cancer if they’ve had any history of any type of thyroid cancer in the past. Dovemed and many other articles and websites all agree that the symptoms that relate to ATC are coughing up blood, difficulty swallowing or breathing, hoarseness or voice changing, lumps located on the neck.

Treatments of ATC is very poor due to the vast rapid spread of this cancer, anaplastic multiplies and grows at such a high rate than other normal cancer cells. “With anaplastic cells they do not die, as a result, they form tumors.” Dovemed explains in their article. Due to the poor treatment of ATC surgery cannot cure this type of cancer, even with the complete removal of the thyroid gland doesn’t prolong patients lives.
