To the average eye Richard Cory would seem to have the world in his hands with absolutely no worries what so ever in life with both his wealth and advanced education. However, while he seemed to have ever thing materially, he never really accumulated anything socially or spiritually throughout his life. Throughout the poem, the people in town would dream about what life would be like if they could just switch places with him. Even referring to him as inferior many felt that they weren’t even worthy of socializing with the great Richard Cory. Ironically from the outside looking in this was all true Richard Cory did seem to have a happier life than all of the townspeople, it would later turn out to be the exact opposite as the author uses the

Many of the townspeople are envious of him and wish to be in his shoes. While they envy him, he is also thought to be somewhat of a king like figure. However, he would turn out to be no more than a simple man, as regardless of his wealth he still comes down to try and interact with the people and even greets them generously. The speaker of poem even tells of how "He was a gentleman from sole to crown/Clean favored, and imperially slim/and he was always quietly arrayed/and he was always human when he talked" (Robinson 3-6). By these lines the reader receives the depiction that Richard Cory dressed well, but different from the people of the town, and had the body build of a God but generally spoke the same as a normal individual. By him going down to the town the reader can also get the sense that he saw himself as no different from any individual in the town.
