The video called The Real Slumdogs takes place in Dharavi, India, a real life slum with around one million people living in one square mile. Dharavi is a landfill created by the people of Mumbai and is now the work place for all of its residents of Dharavi. The producer shows conditions of what a real slum looks like compared to what people come to think when they hear the word “slum”. They all live in very similar conditions and earn around the same income and all their jobs are needed for their town to move forward. Most of the buildings are made out of recyclables with rocks on the roofs. The most popular job is picking through the garbage and short the types of recyclables. Education is around the same all over Dharavi because the income is around the same. All the people in Dharavi is a social class striving to get out and have a better life and still help people in Dharavi. The neighbor of Dharavi is Mumbai and they are wealthier town wanting to bulldoze Dharavi down, but they get most of their recyclables and re dump everything in Dharavi. Dharavi is extremely needed to help Mumbai and India. If you were to categorize Dharavi in the United States they would fall under the very end of poverty. There is nothing you can really do about being in a social class it is how we as people describe were we are in the world whether you are at the bottom or at the top. Dharavi is a fast growing social class that is all consuming because no one can get out. Dharavi might have tiny social classes within its social class and that’s normal. The way Dharavi’s people meet their standard needs is picking and shorting day in and day out, striving for nothing but the best they can do and use what they have. Some people are willing enough to help other people. A town needs a way of transportation so they have a brick road. The town also stores a powerful work ethic in its people so the town can move forward. It was not shown that there was a police force or a hospital. There are special charities that offer educational classes for free to all ages. However Dharavi does not have proper sewage, or housing, but the residents still stay and make the best of it. Everything going on in Dharavi helps or is a basic need for its society. Dharavi is a one square mile and is holding a huge amount of trash so society can meet the need of money and trade. Money and trade lead to food and education for whoever is in the family. I am not sure what the people use for a bed or a chair, maybe they do not use any but someplace to sleep is a basic need. Sadly they did not elaborate on how they really got to their basic needs besides picking and picking through trash to try to get some amount of money. The only reason they are worried about money is that it is the only way to get anything.
