Exposing the truth about how our society creates pressure among women to achieve the idea of a “perfect body.” The song was written in 2013 and released in June next year. They focus on the extremely high standards young women face to fulfill the stereotype society has created for them, regardless of how their self-esteem is being shattered, and how they are capable to put themselves in extreme situations, such as starving themselves to look thin enough, making it a fact that as the title says; being pretty does hurt.

This verse highlight’s how all the marketing that the industry constantly bombards on magazine's and social media, creates an image of how skinnier is prettier. This “image” has a disturbing and unhealthy effect on women's self-esteem, because they start obsessing and comparing themselves to TV Stars, Runway models, etc., and realize that they're not enough. This influence leads young women to do the impossible to look like a cover girl, even if it means starving themselves to look thinner. With this verse, the writers want women to know how far the consequences of wanting to look like a model can lead to a series of eating disorders which go from anorexia to compulsive overeating. Beyoncé also sings in the lyrics “You've stripped away the masquerade/The illusion has been shed/Are you happy with yourself? Are you happy with yourself?” To prove that in the whole process of attempting to achieve beauty and happiness trough perfection, girls start to hate themselves, or whatever is left of them without all the makeup and fancy clothes, because they realize that they never going to be good enough for anyone, much less for themselves.
