Head Heart Lydia Davis Analysis

The poem “Head, Heart” by Lydia Davis is short, but has a very powerful message. To me, the author is speaking of a broken heart story. An issue that a lot of people my age struggle with. The main thing that pointed this out to me was the name of the poem, “Head, Heart.” These two things are what people turn to when they struggle with decisions about a relationship. The struggle is that people do not know whether to turn to their heart or to use their head.
To me, this poem was about the steps taken after a break up. When these types of things happen out of where, people usually do not know where to begin to handle it. Some people think should turn to crying about all of the negatives, or if they should rather think about the positives that came from the relationship and from the break up. The poem almost makes the head and the heart seem like actual living beings rather than just the body parts they are. Making them almost come to life, I believe, is what gave more meaning to the poem. Although the girl in the poem is healthy, intelligent and has other great qualities, everyone just saw a fat nose and thick legs. In the poem it says “So she cut off her nose and her legs and offered them up.” I think that part of the poem means that she got her nose done and lost some fat in her legs, so people could finally like her. You can see many young girls getting plastic surgery or going on some crazy diet just so they can be “perfect.” When someone tells a girl that oh you’re too fat, you need to lose weight, or something is wrong with her face.
