Head Heart Lydia Davis Analysis

The poem “Head, Heart” by Lydia Davis is short, but has a very powerful message. To me, the author is speaking of a broken heart story. An issue that a lot of people my age struggle with. The main thing that pointed this out to me was the name of the poem, “Head, Heart.” These two things are what people turn to when they struggle with decisions about a relationship. The struggle is that people do not know whether to turn to their heart or to use their head.
To me, this poem was about the steps taken after a break up. When these types of things happen out of where, people usually do not know where to begin to handle it. Some people think should turn to crying about all of the negatives, or if they should rather think about the positives that came from the relationship and from the break up. The poem almost makes the head and the heart seem like actual living beings rather than just the body parts they are. Making them almost come to life, I believe, is what gave more meaning to the poem. In the poem when it says “But the words of head do not remain long in the ears of heart.” To me, that part of the poem is almost like when people give other people advice after a breakup but it does not stay in

Although the girl in the poem is healthy, intelligent and has other great qualities, everyone just saw a fat nose and thick legs. In the poem it says “So she cut off her nose and her legs and offered them up.” I think that part of the poem means that she got her nose done and lost some fat in her legs, so people could finally like her. You can see many young girls getting plastic surgery or going on some crazy diet just so they can be “perfect.” When someone tells a girl that oh you’re too fat, you need to lose weight, or something is wrong with her face. It’s just not their confidence that they destroyed but also their

This poem was deep, and had a lot of emotion. You could tell that the writer had been really hurt and maybe had even been taken advantage of. She had a dark and weary tone, which meant that this was an emotional piece to write and it had a big impact on her life, or someone else’s life. She had a rhythm that flowed nicely, and for the most part the syllables in each stanza matched every time, (which I particularly like).…

“Fishhawk” was the first poem of the Classic of Poetry, the earliest poetry collection of East Asia (p.1322). In contrast to many poems in the “Airs of Domain” that propagated Confucianism, “Fishhawk” is a simple love poem. The poem revolves around a young man who was “tormented by his desire for a girl”(p.1322). While this poem is labeled as a “romantic folk song”(p.1322), the good use of literary elements, syntax, and language added a bit of tint to the love story.…

After reading over the poem multiple times, the emotions that begin to arise are ones of peace. The words are soft and calming, “petal by petal the flower of our heart” (line 3) Though the poem evokes some feelings of sadness, I feel at peace as I read over the poem. Memories of nostalgic memories of being with old friends that I had lost. Something about the poem reminds me of the process of moving on, and focusing on the future ahead of us, “Sweeps them away, Each one is gone Ever beyond into infinite ways.”…

Barbie Doll In the poem “Barbie Doll” written by Marge Piercy, the author addresses the stereotypical ideas of what society believes a woman should look like and how a woman should act. The title lends itself to help reinforce these themes of appearance and femininity by implying that women are to fashion themselves around the famous 1959 Mattel doll, Barbie, whose appearance some argue provides an unrealistic expectation for women to strive to achieve. Piercy goes on to show what happens to the unnamed main character of the poem, when faced with the challenge of conforming to these social norms of beauty and femininity.…
