The ‘Prince’ was a 17th century literary work written by Niccolo Machiavelli. The book discussed about politics, on how to secure and maintain political power. It consisted of 26 chapters sharing author’s view of how great leader should be or the code of conduct for the princely government. Machiavelli’s intention behind writing the ‘Prince’ was to get the support and appreciation from the Medici family. In this essay, we are going to discuss about some sections and specification of the book, ‘Prince’. Machiavelli’s views of the ideal, successful Prince speaks the rough truth. According to Machiavelli, the ideal prince should have a harsh and merciless character and be willing to disregard existing social integrity to survive in his role as a ruler. The author also believes that an ideal Prince shall not be under any laws and mores of the society except for the compliance to deal with the issues and situations that fate asks him to face. At times, he must be able to support the views of society even when the views are not right. The prince should be literally dishonest when the situation needs him to be. Also, it is critical to be cunning enough to make people think that he is justful. Also, It is not mandatory for a Prince to have all the leadership, decision-making, straight-forward qualities, but is essential to act like he have these features. Machiavelli realizes that to be a successful Prince, it is harmful to practice the good qualities of a ruler, whereas, to look like having them is helpful. Machiavelli claims that a leader should a combination of a lion and a wolf. Accordingly, he should be prudent while presenting himself as kind-hearted. To summarize, Machiavelli’s main feature of leader is being flexible according to the situation. The Prince’s future in real lies not his attitude towards values and norm codes of the society but his ability to survive according to the situations.
