In 1858, Josiah Henson, a former slave, author, and abolitionist, produced his own memoir, where he details on his life as a former slave and a current freedman. In his autobiography, Henson recollects on the tragic experiences in which he experienced as a slave; through one specific point in the autobiography, “Josiah Henson Portrays the Violence and Fears in Slave Life,” Henson elaborates on the agonizing trials in which families such as his had to endure during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The short story “The Doll”, by Charles Waddell Chesnutt was a rich story that incorporated keys themes that was important in the era of published, the Reconstruction period. After the Civil War, the slaves were emancipated from the chains that kept that were wrap around their lives, but were still in chains of oppression, prejudice, and death. Equality was something not obtainable for the free blacks! Equality was something that some keys leaders during this period such as Booker T. Often in literary works, authors choose a physical object which takes on a special significance in the work and becomes a symbol of something beyond itself. In the stories, The gift of the magi by O. Henry and Lather and Nothing Else by Hernando Tellez, the objects they possessed represented the choice they made and that represents who they are. In The gift of the magi, Jim and Della have their most prized possessions a watch and some hair and In Lather and nothing else, The barber has his razor. Socio-Economic Slavery “Dollhouse” and “Paul’s Case” explore the desire of people to stay in their “rightful” place on the socioeconomic ladder. Both pieces of literature show what people will hide from the world to maintain a perfect front for the world to view upon and admire. Yet, there’s always that underlying conflict underneath that perfect smile. Both this song and story broach a seclusive topic: the two faces to a person. Both “Dollhouse” and “Paul’s Case” use contrasting examples of the two sides of reality; one that is acceptable to others and the other a side that society doesn’t approve of.…
The Politics of Black Hair: A Feminist Analysis of the Construction the Black Female Identity The general consensus amongst most feminist scholars is that beauty standards have not changed much since the 1800s—the construction of female beauty still features a young white woman with large breasts, a small waist, light eyes, and long flowing hair. The act of policing the alteration of Black hair has become one of the most significant ways in which Black people engage in respectability politics. As of 2011, $507 billion dollars of the $836 billion dollar hair care industry is coming from Black women consumers. This means that 80% of all hair care consumers are Black women; while Black women only make up 6% of the United States population (Thompson…
Even though externally you would think they were as masculine as could be, realistically they were not upholding the stereotype due to their low economic standing. They also showed no aspirations to raise themselves out of poverty. These men were also not upholding any sort of economic status because they had no families. There were no females in their lives besides the one prostitute that they keep around. “But at that time she was the only woman in Roaring Camp, and was just then lying in sore extremity, when she most needed the ministration of her own sex.…
The significant role of gender in this essay portrays and highlights Ellison's views of white male racial psychology. Ellison's short story essentially establishes that Caucasian males treat and recognize African American males in roughly the same way males characteristically view and treat females under patriarchy. When reading the short story, I noticed a significant similarity between how the men in the ball room reacted to the white female dancing and the black kids fighting in the ring, they both served as a form of spectacle to the men. In the story the narrator states, “ I noticed a certain merchant who followed her hungrily, his lips loose and drooling.” He then adds, “This creature was completely hypnotized” (Ellison).…
The piece I chose that I believe speaks most about grace and mercy is movement five, “Und went die Welt doll Teufel war”. This movement was later added into this piece after it was finished along with movement one to add timpani and trumpets. In this movement, the choir sings in unison, and the trumpets all play similar parts, with the violins playing counterpoints. The violins play this joyful and freudig run of sixteenth notes throughout most of the movement, creating a vision of swirling devils. This movement is also played in triple meter, creating a sense that a battle has already won, yet at the same time a battle is still being fought, creating a sort of paradox.…
In the world of a Midwest college student, mid-February can only mean two things — it’s not getting warmer anytime soon and there’s still much more work that needs to be completed. Even if this isn’t the world you live in, there are still countless other stressors besides sub-zero temperatures and a never-ending pile of work that has somehow consumed the entirety of a desktop. Sometimes you just have to chalk the day up to a loss and put your feet up in hopes that you’ll remember what it feels like to be calm. For times like these, here are five songs dedicated to dissolving all that built-up stress.…
When the chair that Jefferson would later be executed in is transported to town, some people cannot look at the chair without being made nauseous and are also afraid of the chair. The truck that delivers the electric chair is black and drives slowly through the community. These details included display that the truck and the chair represent death slowly consuming the society’s emotions and moods. “Then Melvina saw it… and it took all her strength, she said later, to remain on her feet (Gaines 237)”. Events like Grant and Jefferson overcoming their trials are examples of how acts of extraordinary strength and self control change the way that society viewed African American people.…
In Feminist settings, conversations surrounding pornographic content and its influence are often polarizing; the discrepancy of attitudes towards pornography between opposing parties can be acrimonious and fraught with tension. Radical feminists tend to take up an anti-pornography stance, citing concerns of the representation of women, violent and sexist practices of the pornography industry and violence that correlates with the consumption of pornography. Liberal, sex-positive feminists have sought to reform the industry and assert that representations of sexuality are not only morally neutral but also allow women to explore their sexualities. Those in opposition to the censorship of pornography claim that it is tantamount to the violation of freedom of speech. Despite efforts to reframe…
A person says what they want everyone to hear and shows what they want everyone to see. In Henrick Ibsen’s play A Doll’s House Nora’s and Torvald’s relationship mimics the statement greatly. They were very prestige actors in their society by displaying a marriage to the world that had little to no blemishes nor shortcomings, but in reality their relationship was built upon the foundation of miscommunication, synthetic love, and the illusion of an inseparable bond. It was almost as if their marriage was condemned by the public 's opinion so they strived for perfection but it backfired and failed miserably in the end.…
