In the world of a Midwest college student, mid-February can only mean two things — it’s not getting warmer anytime soon and there’s still much more work that needs to be completed. Even if this isn’t the world you live in, there are still countless other stressors besides sub-zero temperatures and a never-ending pile of work that has somehow consumed the entirety of a desktop. Sometimes you just have to chalk the day up to a loss and put your feet up in hopes that you’ll remember what it feels like to be calm. For times like these, here are five songs dedicated to dissolving all that built-up stress.

Number Five: “Paper Doll” by John Mayer. Jenna Maroney once stated in the 30 Rock episode, “Verna,” that “it was perfect, like a John Mayer song.” For me, this has to be the song she was talking about. From his 2013 album Wildfire, “Paper Doll” is just about as relaxing as music can get. The harmonies and guitar picking in the chorus make it an especially great song to which you can just chill. While the bass isn’t an incredibly prominent figure, it’s still a very relaxing sensation to be able to sit back and feel it deep inside your soul. And of course, Mayer’s trademark vocals are what secure “Paper Doll” as my all-time favorite song for relaxation.

Number Four: “Peggy-O” by Simon & Garfunkel. While most kids were

This is probably the biggest paradox of a song — upbeat yet relaxing! From his 1986 album, Graceland, Paul Simon outdid himself on “Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes.” Simon drew heavily on South African musical influences with help from male choral group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, and highly talented musicians such as guitarist Ray Phiri, bassist Bakithi Kumalo, drummer Isaac Mtshali, and Senegalese singer Youssou N’dour. “Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes” is a grooving escape to a more comforting place. This is one you’ll play over and over until you’re left stress-free and

Following the Age of Enlightenment, the concept of Separate Spheres emerged as a distinct ideology that imposed gender roles which dictated that the men’s place was in the public sphere while the women’s place was in the private sphere. It claimed that the division was natural, rooted in the biological difference between men and women. The men’s role was to live grandiose dreams while the women’s role was to be a model of self-control with utmost obedience and spirituality. Kate Ferguson Ellis argues that the concept of Separate Spheres constructed toxic family systems that disabled both men and women as well as their children. Ellis claims that Separate Spheres facilitated the enforcement of harmful gender roles because it held men to an unattainable…

“We’re told these days that the hottest and fastest wire into memory is our sense of smell, but music must run a close second. I cannot think of a time in my life where music hasn’t been there because I use music in times of trouble and in times of joy. It is in the background of every memory I have.…

Oh Huckleberry Hound, the cartoon doggie, I loved him! Well, I neither knew very well to what the phrase 'Huckleberry friend' meant and for that reason Huckleberry Finn always came to my mind :) but reading to its own authors, 'Huckleberry friend' would be synonym of 'very very special good friend, that has been in your life for years, someone who stuck to you, and follows you to wherever you go', no matter where, and is with you in good times and bad. 'Stranger on the shore' is so beautiful, Ken, I love it. The other songs you mentioned are very good too, so these are the songs you would like to listen as if they were in the air, and they were activated, by a invisible hand, in every special moment of your life.…

Henrik Isben’s controversial play, ‘A doll House’, is centered on a concept that has, for so long, plagued the female community, overt oppression. The main character Nora Helman, lives with her husband and children in a typical household of the era. Ibsen reveals with frankness the lack of independence and freedom accessible to most women during that time. In the play, Ibsen uses discourse and dramatic situations to demonstrate the insufficient social selections available to Nora, as well as how social roles serve to limit the personal and emotional advancement of women. Question #2: Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll's House premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, on December 21, 1879. Considering this date in time, it is obvious that this is the type of work that fueled the avant-garde movement. Not to take anything away from Ibsen’s play, but from the eyes of the Futurists, the characters were mirrors of the audience members, and performed what was ‘expected’ of them in the current male-centric culture. The Norwegian critic Erik Bøgh, writing for newspaper Folkets Avis, admired Ibsen's originality and technical mastery: "Not a single declamatory phrase, no high dramatics, no drop of blood, not even a tear.”…
