First of all the Barber is going to let Captain Torres live or go out the store safely. The first reason for this argument is that the Barber cares about his life and the store he works at because he is the best Barber in the whole town. The Gift of the Magi, by O' Henry, utilizes allusion to portray a better understanding towards the theme of the story. The author references wealthy biblical figures to emphasize Jim and Della Young's obvious poverty. By stating that Della's hair is to be so gorgeous that it would devalue the Queen of Sheba's jewels and that Jim's watch is said to bring envy from King Solomon, the author highlights how precious Della and Jim regard their possessions. For the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon were both powerful monarchs renowned for their abundant wealth, to Jim and Della those two items are treasures. The author as well compares the young couple to the magi; the magi are often depicted as wise men that brought Jesus three expensive gifts: gold,…

Many people think that they are foolish when giving each other gifts because they sold the object most valuable to themselves in order to get the other a good present. Both the hair and the watch was not something that they could part with so easily. It took strength and sacrifice to give those objects up. I think that they are wise because while i was reading the story i took a deeper look into the narrators words.…

“Sacrificing your happiness for the happiness of the one you love is by far the truest type of love” (Unknown). In every relationship someone sacrifices something for the happiness of the other. In “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry, the main theme is that love sometimes involves sacrifice. “To sacrifice is to give up something precious in order to gain or maintain something” (Ben-Zeev 1). In the “pursuit of materialism,” objects can often define a character’s depiction and can play a part in displaying their personality as stated by Thomas C. Foster of How To Read Novels Like A Professor. More often than not, that desire finds an emblem -an object or action- to give it tangible expression” (Thomas C. Foster 173). The tactic of characterization through items is used masterfully in such short stories as: Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been, Silver Waters, and The Second Bakery Attack to give readers a more in-depth look at the characters without directly telling them,…
