My mom would say, “You should marry a doctor so you can stay home and raise kids.” I would always laugh and change the subject as soon as I could. As I grew older she said it more and more. I finally told her, “No mom! I want to be that doctor.” Of course she was thrilled that I finally made a decision about my future, but deep down she knew that I probably would never have children due to the intense focus and devotion that the job requires.
