Analysis Data from respondents were submitted for analysis of summary statistics and frequencies. Additionally, a one-way ANOVA was preformed to determine significant differences between the means of the three independent groups (no ASD disclosure, ASD bracelet, and ASD card). Furthermore, after initial analysis, a Scheffe post hoc test was preformed to examine if any two groups within the study are similar or different.
Results
For illustrative purposes, results of disclosure can be seen in table 1. An analysis of variance showed that the effect of disclosure method was significant on respondents level of criticalness for the mother/child, F(2,373)= 41.48, p .05, in the no disclosure (M= 3.46, SD = 0.95) bracelet (M = 3.57, SD = 0.93) and in the card (M = 3.55, SD = 0.92) conditions. However, the interaction effect of believing the mother must be embarrassed was significant, F(2,378) = 6.87, p<.01. Results of the Scheffe post hoc indicated that the mean scores were higher for the no disclosure (M = 3.64, SD = 0.90) condition in comparison to the bracelet (M = 3.15, SD = 1.03) and card (M = 3.15, SD = 0.99) conditions.
Discussion
The current study provides insight on the ongoing conversation about Autism Spectrum Disorders. Our results suggest that no disclosure results in more negative reactions (e.g., parental critique and projected embarrassment) than other forms of ASD disclosure. Findings of the effect of disclosure method for criticalness of the mother/child are…
