ISP What is an ISP and how did all of this come about? Well first an ISP (Internet service provider) is a company that provides your home or business with internet for a monthly fee. The first people that had any type of internet, in the 1990s, was the government, until in 1994 when the national science foundation gave four private companies the rights to build public internet access points, which introduced the public to the start of the internet. The four public access points were located in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, New Jersey, and Chicago. They were controlled by “WorldCom, Pacific Bell, Sprint, and Ameritech” (History And Development). As the number of users increased the public access points began to become over populated, so some major telecommunications companies started to branch out and make their own private access points, which began building out the internet backbone for the future. For a while “the larger backbone providers established peering agreements with smaller ISPs, whereby they would swap internet traffic for free” (History And Development). In 1997 some large backbone providers stopped working with smaller ISPs and giving free internet access . They started charging people a monthly fee for internet access. In 1995 there were about “160 commercial Internet access providers in the United States” (History and Development). The monthly fees for internet access “were about $17.50, with connect time billed at $3 hour” (History and Development).…
