The Charmer
Why is it so difficult for us to accept responsibility for our actions? The more we are willing to accept the responsibility for our actions, the more credibility we will have. Everything we do each and everyday is based on our choices and only we are responsible for every decision we make. In the short story “The Charmer” narrated by the character Winnifred, Budge Wilson tries to illustrate that sometimes if we don’t take responsibility for our actions it could result in a great deal of pain for ourselves and the people around us. As a result of zachary not being able to take responsibility for his actions he thinks that he is able to get away with anything as long as he uses his charm and his acting skills. For example everyone in his family idolized him even Winifred was his willing slave for a period of time. It also took the father a long time to realize what Zachary was up to. Zachary would always lie over trifles, steal out of wallets that were left lying around and drank from the liquor cabinet. Even one night after a poker game he was able to smash up their family car, but the thing that bothered his father more than smashing the car was when he dumped his father’s toolbox into the river during one of his rages. After all of these events Zachary would use his looks and acting skills to dramatizing his actions and give an apology that would have brought tears to a preacher’s eyes, and everyone would forgive him. For example when lizzie got sick with leukemia and everyone including Zachary knew she would die. Lizzie idolized Zachary more than anyone else in her family, but Zachary only visited lizzie once and it brighten her day. After that one day Zachary never visited his sister ever again. In addition the mother would always beg Zachary to go visit lizzie but he would always be frustrated and would always take the family car, just the rest of the family was needing it to visit the hospital. But the mother would always give Zachary the benefit of the doubt because she believes that he is suffering more than the rest of them. After Lizzie had past away Zachary showed up at the hospital dress in the outfit Lizzie love the most and a bouquet of 5 orchids. In the chinese culture the number Five is a huge symbol for good luck. That was the moment when his family members realized who he was and started to turn on him. As a result of Zachary not visiting lizze during her last six weeks, his father was done with Zachary’s attitude. So he told him that he had two choices either he could get his act together and help out around the house or he could pack his bags and clear out. He decision to walk out on his family and never come back was a bold move. He makes a decision based on his own well being and does not take his family’s emotions into consideration. Therefore
