Vietnam was split into the North and South which were at war with each other for many years. During the Vietnam War beginning in 1955 many of the Vietnamese started fleeing their homeland to the United States during the fall of Saigon. (Jones, (2005) Many refugee camps were set up for the new immigrants coming to America. One camp site was near my home, it was at Fort Chaffee, Fort Smith, Arkansas. While Sandy was growing up her view point about her country’s government was that it did not help the people like they should have. After the war in Vietnam many children were left stranded either by families dyeing or being abandoned by their parents. Several were fathered by Americans and were turned away by many people and left to live on the streets. (Lamb, (2009) Sandy’s grandparents on both sides of the family died during the war. When asked about her grandparents she mentioned she did not know much about them because she did not ask her mother about them, it was disrespectful to talk about them since they
