“America, the Land of the Free.” People have been immigrating to the United States ever since the 1500’s when America was discovered. The United States has and continues to attract people because of its superior education, healthcare, job opportunities, and freedoms of religion and speech. Immigration is a continuing controversial issue expressed by both liberals and conservatives now that the 2016 presidential election is in stride.
Since immigration is not found within the constitution, Republicans in general suggest that immigrants are taking over the U.S. jobs and contribute to a negative effect on the economy due to many subsidies being offered to them. Many rightists strongly believe U.S. born citizens should be prioritized before immigrants in terms of social security and healthcare. As stated in Washington Post article, “Obama budgets $17,613 for every illegal immigrant minor which is more than social security retirees get” author Paul Bedard depicts how “Every new illegal immigrant that is a minor receives $17,613 which is approximately $2,842 more than social security for retirees in a year span.” With this, the Republican party is confounded of why people who haven 't lived nor worked a day on U.S. soil should be entitled to subsidies that pay more than the American citizens living there for 70 years. In addition, with the allowing of immigrants, many Conservatives believe that the U.S. is more susceptible to the smuggling of drugs and terrorism. With the recent…
